PACE Event “Law Presentation for Startups”

Jun 27, 2018

On June 21, 2018, associates Dylan Taschner, Jennifer Yamanuha and Jordan Odo were featured speakers at an event titled “Law Presentation for Startups” hosted by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE). The presentation was a segment of the Summer Startup Launchpad, a 6-week program for University of Hawaiʻi students designed to help budding entrepreneurs evaluate an idea and launch a business.

Dylan led the workshop with a review of business entity types, highlighting key legal, practical, and strategic considerations in selecting the appropriate fit for a new venture. Next, Jennifer provided an overview of intellectual property basics and discussed various risks and protection strategies. Jordan then provided general employment law highlights, and closed the seminar by focusing on the distinction between employees and independent contractors and ramifications of hiring each. The event was interactive, with questions and answers being taken throughout the formal presentation. Attendees took the opportunity to speak with the presenters after the presentation, discussing their business ideas and how the information presented would apply.

PACE, an extension of the University of Hawai’i’s Shidler College of Business, offers mentorship, training and resources to all UH students and faculty, and is designed to encourage entrepreneurial thinking across disciplines and to inspire entrepreneurs to move their ideas from conceptualization to commercialization.
